Exploring the Roads from Mae Sariang to Mae Tuen: A Journey Through Mountains and Culture

The ride from Mae Sariang to Mae Tuen is one of those unforgettable motorbike journeys that offers a perfect combination of smooth roads, breathtaking mountain views, and cultural immersion. Starting at 9 a.m. after a relaxing evening, this ride felt like a seamless mix of adventure and discovery, and it didn’t disappoint.

The Ride Begins: Cruising on Route 108

The day began with the calm and easygoing vibe of Route 108, a smooth and well-maintained road. With very little traffic, it was a pleasure to ease into the morning breeze as the crisp air greeted us. As we turned off toward Omkoi, the temperature dropped noticeably, and the wind picked up with the elevation, reaching a cool 20°C.

Route 108 provided a great introduction to the day’s journey, with its mix of winding curves, forests, and open spaces. The road was in perfect condition, making for a smooth and enjoyable ride as we headed toward the mountains.

Route 1099: A True Motorbiker’s Playground

The highlight of the journey was undoubtedly Route 1099, a winding road that led us deeper into the mountainous terrain. This road was both well-paved and thrilling, with twists and turns that felt perfect under the weight of the bike.

Riding through this stretch of road, the scenery changed dramatically with every mile. Pine trees eventually gave way to teak wood forests, creating a natural tapestry of green and gold. When we reached the highest point of the ride, the view stretched for miles. Although the sky wasn’t the bluest of blues on this day, the misty, cloud-laden atmosphere gave the ride an ethereal quality—a feeling of being on top of the world. There’s something special about riding through clouds, and the experience here felt truly magical.

The Descent into the Valley: Mae Tuen Awaits

After soaking in the views from the mountain pass, it was time to wind our way down into the valley. The descent offered some of the most picturesque riding of the day. The road meandered through small local villages, skirting rivers and crossing narrow paths that connected the mountain community with the surrounding wilderness.

The village of Mae Tuen marked the end of this ride. Nestled in a quiet valley, Mae Tuen offers a fascinating glimpse into life untouched by modern conveniences. The small, traditional village has a population in which only about 10% of locals speak Thai or the Northern dialect, while the majority converse in Karen or other regional dialects. Despite its isolation, Mae Tuen is well-developed in terms of health and education infrastructure. Yet, the absence of chain stores like 7/11 or nearby banks added to its rustic authenticity.

A Taste of Mae Tuen: Lunch and Local Flavors

Our plan was to enjoy a simple pizza at a local eatery, but as it turned out, the restaurant didn’t open until 3 p.m. That left us with a quick alternative—cool chai yen (Thai-style iced tea) and a sweet slice of cake. It was just enough to stave off hunger while we soaked in the village vibe and looked out at the surrounding hills. Sometimes, these little unplanned detours make for the most memorable experiences.

Finding a Perfect Rest Spot: Ban Sang Chan Resort

After a day of riding and exploration, we found a wonderful place to stay: Ban Sang Chan Resort. This charming spot offered everything we needed: quiet surroundings, beautiful views, and safe parking for our motorbike. At just 600 Baht per night, the resort was both affordable and an oasis of comfort—perfect for a much-needed rest.

The atmosphere was serene, offering the perfect setting to unwind, recharge, and take in the incredible surroundings. With its mountain views and cozy vibe, it felt like the ideal spot to spend two nights as we explored the area at a relaxed pace.

The Perfect End to a Great Riding Day

Although the distance from Mae Sariang to Mae Tuen wasn’t particularly far, the day was packed with incredible roads, mountain views, and cultural discoveries.

The winding roads, cool mountain air, and constantly shifting scenery made the ride feel like much more than just a simple trip. It was a journey—a reminder of the joy of exploration and the beauty of Thailand’s less-traveled paths.

With two nights ahead in Mae Tuen, we’re looking forward to taking time to relax, explore the village further, and enjoy the slower pace of life in this special corner of the country.
