TH-Nakhon Si Thammarat to Lang Suan

Route 4073, Koh Thale Tai National Park, Khanom, Thailand

19.02.2025 – Singapore to Sisaket day 8

Embarking on a motorbike journey from Nakhon Si Thammarat to Lang Suan offers an intimate glimpse into the heart of southern Thailand. Covering approximately 392 kilometers, this route weaves through coastal highways, serene villages, and lush landscapes, providing riders with a rich tapestry of experiences.

Early Departure from Nakhon Si Thammarat

Understanding the intensity of the midday heat in this region, we commenced our ride at 6 am, just as dawn began to break. The streets of Nakhon Si Thammarat were tranquil, allowing for a smooth departure. The cool morning air and the soft light of the rising sun set a serene tone for the journey ahead.

Navigating Route 401

Our journey began on Route 401, a significant highway that stretches across southern Thailand. This well-maintained road is characterized by its dual carriageways and scenic surroundings, making it a favored choice for long-distance travelers. As we progressed, the unpredictable southern Thai weather made its presence known. Within a span of kilometers, we experienced alternating bouts of dryness, light drizzles, and heavy downpours. Such rapid weather changes are typical in this region, adding an element of unpredictability to the ride.

Morning Respite Between Sichon and Khanom

By 8 am, we reached the stretch between Sichon and Khanom, renowned among motorbike enthusiasts, especially those from Malaysia and Singapore. This segment is celebrated for its picturesque coastal views and winding roads, making it a popular spot for photography and relaxation. We paused at a local café, savoring freshly brewed coffee and tea while soaking in the serene coastal ambiance. While Khanom Beach is known for its beauty, its burgeoning popularity has led to increased tourist activity, prompting us to continue our journey in search of more secluded spots.

Contemplating a Detour to Don Sak

Our route led us to Don Sak, a district in Surat Thani province, known for its ferry services to Koh Samui. The piers at Don Sak are bustling with activity, serving as gateways for travelers heading to the island. We briefly entertained the idea of visiting Koh Samui. However, considering the island’s popularity during this season and the influx of tourists, we decided against it. The prospect of navigating crowded streets alongside numerous rental scooters posed unnecessary risks, leading us to prioritize safety and continue our mainland journey.

Traversing the Outskirts of Surat Thani

Approaching Surat Thani, the landscape shifted to expansive palm oil plantations, a testament to the region’s agricultural prominence. The ride became monotonous, with long stretches of straight roads flanked by uniform rows of palm trees. Surat Thani itself, often referred to as the “City of Good People,” is a significant hub in southern Thailand, though our path skirted the city’s bustling center. Opting for the coastal road, we sought the allure of the sea, even if it meant enduring less scenic stretches.

Arrival in Chumphon Province

Entering Chumphon province marked a refreshing change in scenery. In the district of Lamae, the proximity of the road to the shoreline offered glimpses of the Gulf of Thailand. However, the aftermath of recent storms had left debris scattered along the beaches, diminishing their usual charm. Despite this, the coastal route provided a welcome respite from the monotony of palm plantations, with the scent of the sea invigorating our senses.

Discovering the Thailand Riviera

As we ventured further, we found ourselves on the Thailand Riviera, a stretch of coastline that the Thai government has been developing to boost tourism. This initiative aims to transform the Gulf of Thailand’s shoreline into a series of interconnected tourist destinations, enhancing infrastructure and promoting local attractions. The improved road conditions, coupled with gentle curves and scenic vistas, made this segment particularly enjoyable for motorbike enthusiasts.

Evening in Pak Nam Lang Suan

Our destination for the day was Pak Nam Lang Suan, a coastal town in Chumphon province.

We secured accommodation at a recently established resort, offering spacious rooms and sheltered parking facilities, all for a reasonable 750 Baht. The resort’s location, slightly removed from the town center, provided a tranquil environment, perfect for unwinding after a day’s ride. As evening descended, we embarked on a leisurely walk into town, eager to explore local eateries and immerse ourselves in the community’s rhythm.

Anticipating the Journey to Ban Krut

Looking ahead, our next leg involves a 220-kilometer ride to Ban Krut, a coastal village known for its pristine beaches and laid-back atmosphere. We’ve already secured accommodations for a three-night stay, intending to indulge in the seaside serenity, savor fresh seafood, and frequent a renowned local bakery famed for its bread and pastries. This extended pause will allow us to rejuvenate before embarking on the final stretch of our journey back home.

Reflections on the Road Ahead

The concluding phase of our trip will see us navigating through Hua Hin and Cha Am, both popular beach destinations, before confronting the challenges of Bangkok’s dense traffic. While these urban areas present logistical hurdles, they also offer unique experiences and sights. However, the prospect of congested roads and the need for heightened vigilance tempers our enthusiasm. Our strategy remains to commence rides early, leveraging the cooler mornings and lighter traffic, ensuring safety and comfort as we progress northward.

Final Thoughts

This segment from Nakhon Si Thammarat to Lang Suan encapsulated the diverse landscapes and experiences southern Thailand has to offer. From the bustling ferry terminals of Don Sak to the serene stretches of the Thailand Riviera, each kilometer presented its own narrative. The journey underscored the importance of adaptability, as weather patterns shifted unexpectedly, and plans evolved in response to on-ground realities. As we prepare for the forthcoming stages of our adventure, the memories forged on this leg serve as a testament to the enduring allure of motorbike travel through Thailand’s southern corridors.

Stay tuned and enjoy yourself!!!
