01.12.24 – Day 31 North of Thailand
Tha Song Yang to Huai Sakae: A Day of Farewell, Highways, and Hidden Highlights
The ride from Tha Song Yang to Huai Sakae marked the end of another chapter in our journey through Thailand. While the day started with a moody, foggy scene and a bittersweet farewell to friends, the ride itself offered a mix of mountain curves, highways, and moments of reflection. While much of the day was spent on the main roads, the route still brought a few highlights, reminders of the northern beauty we’re leaving behind, and plenty of opportunities for contemplation.
A Foggy Good Morning: Coffee, Goodbyes, and the Start of the Day
We woke to a world wrapped in fog. The air felt cool and damp as we looked outside from our resort. After a warm cup of coffee and a quick breakfast, we met up with our friends one last time. Saying goodbye is always bittersweet—especially when you’re not sure when or if you’ll be back. But life on the road continues, and our journey was taking us southward once again.
At 8:45 a.m., we rolled out of the resort and began our ride south on Route 105. The cool mountain air accompanied us as we set off, knowing that this would be the start of a new leg of the journey.
Turning into the Mountains: Mae Ramat to Ban Tak
Our first turn came at Mae Ramat, where we left the main roads and climbed into the mountains. The fresh air and winding curves were a welcome change after days of highways and straight paths. The ride up toward Ban Tak was everything we hoped for—serpentine roads, light traffic, and the joy of twisting and turning through mountain passes. This was the kind of riding that motorbikers dream of—cool air, great scenery, and curves that make you feel alive.
Ban Tak was a pleasant little gateway into the next phase of our ride. From there, we picked up Route 1, a major highway, and began the next leg of our journey toward the central plains.
Highways and Heat: From Tak to the Open Roads
After leaving the curves and coolness of the mountain roads, we joined Route 1, the main highway stretching toward Phetchabun. This part of the ride was less exciting. Straight roads and long stretches of asphalt can sometimes become monotonous, especially when the scenery shifts to plain landscapes and the sun rises higher in the sky. The temperature climbed steadily throughout the day, reaching highs of 31 to 32°C.
As much as we were enjoying the journey, there was a tinge of sadness, too. Riding out of northern Thailand meant leaving behind those misty mountain roads, cool air, and misty valleys. There’s always a small voice that wonders whether you’re heading in the wrong direction, leaving too much unexplored. Northern Thailand is a magical place, and the thought of all the unseen routes and hidden paths added a touch of melancholy to the ride.
Finding Highlights on the Long Road
While the highway was hot and straightforward, there were still some small jewels along the way. Route 113, for instance, offered a return to winding mountain roads and impressive views. Although it was heavily trafficked—serving as the main connection between Phitsanulok and Phetchabun—it felt like a brief respite from the monotony of the highway.
After making our way off route 113, we picked up route 21 and continued toward Huai Sakae. The scenery was still beautiful, and with each passing mile, we could feel ourselves slowly leaving the northern highlands behind and entering the central plains.
Stopping for the Night: 600 Baht for the View
After a full day of riding—460 km to be exact—it felt good to call it a day. We found a small but comfortable place to stay away from the main highway. For just 600 Baht per night, the accommodation provided a peaceful respite, good views, and a chance to relax after a long day. While not a luxury retreat, it felt perfect after a full day of motorbike exploration and highways.
With a view toward the mountains and enough quiet to gather our thoughts, we knew this would be the perfect spot to unwind for the evening and prepare for tomorrow’s journey.
Looking Ahead: Tomorrow’s Plan
Tomorrow’s ride will take us toward Chaiyaphum, where we plan to visit a stunning cliff and then return to Phetchabun for some cultural exploration. Thailand is rich with history, heritage sites, and natural beauty, and we’re excited to take a closer look at what Phetchabun has to offer. There’s always something new to discover on these rides—whether that’s through hidden paths, cultural landmarks, or incredible views.
Reflections on the Day
While today wasn’t the most thrilling of rides due to a lot of time spent on the highway, it was still a good day overall. The quiet moments in the mountains, the nostalgia for the northern routes we’re leaving behind, and the smooth winding roads we managed to experience all contributed to a fulfilling journey.
Sometimes, the best rides aren’t just about chasing mountain curves or unexpected views but about reflecting on the journey itself—the people you meet, the landscapes you witness, and the roads you explore.
Tomorrow promises more adventure and history. Until then, we’ll enjoy our quiet spot near Huai Sakae, a perfect stopping point that allows for rest, reflection, and planning for the next leg of the trip.
Stay tuned and enjoy yourself!!
