Exploring Southern Thailand by Motorbike: Ban Tha Khun to Thung Yai

There’s something magical about traveling by motorbike, especially in Thailand, where winding roads, breathtaking landscapes, and charming towns make every journey an adventure. Our 330 km ride from Ban Tha Khun to Thung Yai was no exception. This route, packed with twists, serene valleys, and off-the-beaten-path backroads, gave us a day full of exhilarating moments and peaceful escapes.

The Morning Ride: A Cool Start and Great Breakfast

The day began at 8:45 AM, with the fresh mountain air invigorating us as we set out. Temperatures hovered around 24°C, a comfortable coolness that made the early start especially enjoyable. After a hearty breakfast at the resort, we geared up for a day of exploration.

Our journey took us along Route 401, a road that skirts the back side of Khao Sok National Park. The scenery was stunning—mountains draped in mist, quiet valleys waking to the morning sun, and lush greenery surrounding us at every turn. Riding along this stretch felt like reconnecting with an old friend, as this was our fourth time taking this route. Yet, it never loses its charm.

Surprisingly, the road was relatively empty, with very few tourists on rental scooters. The absence of congestion allowed us to fully embrace the tranquility of the region and focus on the ride.

Scenic Roads and Rising Temperatures

One of the highlights of the day was traversing the old Route 4 in Phang-Nga, widely regarded as one of the most scenic roads in southern Thailand. This stretch never fails to impress, with its dramatic landscapes and smooth twists that are a joy for motorbike enthusiasts. The ride felt effortless, weaving through quiet valleys and taking in breathtaking vistas that seemed to stretch endlessly.

However, as we descended from the mountains and left the cooler elevations behind, the temperature steadily climbed. By mid-afternoon, it had reached a sweltering 34°C. Riding in the intense heat can be challenging, especially in full gear, so frequent hydration stops became a necessity.

A Cultural Stop: Wat Maha That Wachiramongkol, Krabi,

Midway through the journey, we took a brief detour to visit Wat Maha That Wachiramongkol, an impressive temple not far from our route. Known for its towering golden pagoda and serene atmosphere, it’s a sight worth seeing. However, the heat was relentless, and running around in full motorbike gear under the blazing sun was less than ideal. While the temple’s beauty was undeniable, we didn’t linger long before heading back to the road.

Backroads in Krabi: A Peaceful Escape

To avoid the heavy traffic and monotony of the main highway, we decided to take some backroads through Krabi Province. This turned out to be one of the best decisions of the day. The roads were quiet, with no tourists in sight—just local traffic and glimpses of everyday life in southern Thailand.

The scenery along these backroads was a mix of charming rural landscapes, small villages, and occasional stretches of lush greenery. While some sections were more picturesque than others, the peace and quiet made it a welcome detour.

Arriving in Thung Yai: A Hidden Gem

By the time we reached Thung Yai, it was late afternoon, and we were ready to relax. Neither of us had been to this small town before, so it was a pleasant surprise to discover the Screen Resort, located just 4 kilometers outside the city. The resort was clean, had safe parking for our bikes, and the owner’s warm hospitality immediately made us feel at home.

The only downside to this otherwise perfect stay was the lack of nearby restaurants. Thankfully, the resort had a solution—“Ant,” a local food delivery service, ensured we didn’t go hungry. After a satisfying meal, we settled in for a quiet evening, planning to take a short walk before an early night’s sleep.

Reflections on the Day’s Ride

The journey from Ban Tha Khun to Thung Yai was a perfect blend of scenic beauty, cultural exploration, and off-the-beaten-path discoveries.

The mix of winding mountain roads, peaceful valleys, and rural backroads made the ride exciting without being overly exhausting.

For motorbike travelers, days like these highlight why Thailand is such a fantastic destination. The freedom of the open road, the ever-changing landscapes, and the opportunity to stumble upon hidden gems make every kilometer worthwhile.

Looking Ahead: On to Satun

With 330 kilometers behind us, we’re looking forward to tomorrow’s ride to Satun, a charming city in southern Thailand. At 260 kilometers, the journey promises to be a bit shorter but no less rewarding. The excitement of discovering new roads and destinations keeps us motivated, even after long days on the bike.

Final Thoughts

The ride from Ban Tha Khun to Thung Yai encapsulated everything we love about motorbike travel: the thrill of the open road, the joy of discovery, and the simple pleasures of a great breakfast and a welcoming place to stay. Southern Thailand’s diverse landscapes and rich culture make it a dream destination for riders, and we’re already looking forward to what tomorrow will bring.

If you’re planning your own motorbike adventure in Thailand, don’t hesitate to add this route to your itinerary. You won’t be disappointed.
