From Khao Ngu to Ban Krut: A 370-Kilometer Journey on Two Wheels
Motorbike touring offers more than just a way to get from one place to another—it’s about the experiences along the way, the thrill of the ride, and the freedom to explore. Today’s route from Khao Ngu to Ban Krut was a perfect example of this. Covering 370 kilometers, the journey featured a mix of winding mountain roads, straight highway stretches, and picturesque scenery. Despite some mundane moments, the day was filled with rewarding sights and the satisfaction of reaching a beautiful destination by the sea.
A Relaxed Morning Start
The day began in the most relaxed way possible—enjoying coffee and tea while chatting with the friendly owner of the resort where we had stayed the night. These quiet moments before hitting the road are a reminder of the joys of slow travel. Conversations like these often reveal insights about local culture, the area’s hidden gems, or simply provide a pleasant connection to the people of Thailand.
By the time we set off, it was almost 9 a.m., and the sun was already climbing higher in the sky. The plan for the day was straightforward: continue southward along Route 4, then break away onto smaller, more scenic roads whenever possible.
A Taste of the Mountains in Phetchaburi
The first 40 kilometers on Route 4 were uneventful, with straight roads cutting through flat terrain. While efficient, these stretches lack the excitement and engagement of more dynamic routes. Fortunately, we soon turned off the main highway and onto smaller roads that took us into the mountains of Phetchaburi.
The change in scenery was immediate and welcome. The air was cool—hovering around 22 degrees Celsius—and the winding roads were in excellent condition. These are the kinds of roads every motorcyclist dreams of: curves that challenge your skills, surrounded by lush greenery and serene mountain views. Riding through this section was pure joy, a reminder of why we love to travel on two wheels.

Straight Roads and Coffee Breaks
After the exhilaration of the mountain roads, Route 3510 brought us back to long, straight stretches. These sections can be mentally taxing for riders, as the monotony can lead to fatigue and a lack of focus. To combat this, we stopped for a coffee break—a crucial pause to refresh both body and mind.
Breaks like these are essential on long rides, not just for the caffeine boost but also to reflect on the journey so far. Sitting at a roadside café, watching the world go by, and sharing a moment of calm before continuing on is one of the simple pleasures of motorcycle travel.
Exploring Kaeng Krachan National Park
Revitalized after the break, we headed toward Kaeng Krachan National Park and its namesake reservoir. The road leading to the park was another highlight of the day, featuring more winding curves and cool, refreshing air. However, the conditions became increasingly windy, adding an extra layer of challenge to the ride.
The reservoir itself was stunning, surrounded by rolling hills and dense forests. Kaeng Krachan National Park is Thailand’s largest national park, and its natural beauty is immediately apparent. Although we didn’t spend much time here, the ride through the area was a memorable part of the day, offering a sense of tranquility and connection to nature.
Southward on Small Roads
Exiting the park, we decided to forgo strict navigation and instead made our way south using smaller, less traveled roads. The surfaces varied in quality—some were smooth and easy to ride, while others required careful attention to avoid potholes. Despite the lack of remarkable landmarks, this section of the journey was thoroughly enjoyable.
There’s something inherently satisfying about riding through unfamiliar territory, relying on instinct and the occasional road sign. It’s these moments of exploration, where the focus is purely on the ride itself, that make motorcycle touring so rewarding.

Hitting the Highway Near Hua Hin
As we approached Hua Hin, we rejoined the main highway.
While not as scenic or enjoyable as the smaller roads, the highway allowed us to cover distance quickly. With the day slipping away, we checked the map and decided to push onward to Ban Krut, a seaside destination known for its pristine beaches and laid-back atmosphere.
Arriving in Ban Krut
After a long day on the road, arriving in Ban Krut felt like reaching paradise. This quiet coastal town is a hidden gem, far removed from the hustle and bustle of Thailand’s more tourist-heavy areas. The beach stretched out in both directions, its soft sands lapped by gentle waves.
Our accommodation for the night was simple yet charming—a beachfront property costing just 900 Baht. It offered everything we needed: a comfortable bed, a peaceful setting, and the promise of a good night’s rest. After parking the bike and unpacking, it was time to relax.

Time to Unwind
Ban Krut’s appeal lies in its simplicity. There’s no rush, no crowded streets, and no overwhelming noise—just the sound of the ocean and the gentle rhythm of life by the sea. We took the opportunity to enjoy fresh seafood, go for a leisurely walk along the beach, and let the day’s ride fade into memory.

For motorbike travelers, these moments of stillness are as important as the rides themselves. They provide a chance to recharge, reflect, and appreciate the journey. After covering 370 kilometers, it was a welcome break to set aside the bike for a while and immerse ourselves in the relaxed atmosphere of Ban Krut.
Reflections on the Day
Looking back, the day was a mix of highs and lows, but the overall experience was undeniably positive. The cool weather and winding roads in the mountains of Phetchaburi and Kaeng Krachan National Park were highlights, offering both excitement and natural beauty. The straight highway stretches, while less thrilling, served their purpose in connecting us to our destination.
The journey also reinforced the importance of flexibility and embracing the unexpected. Whether it’s a spontaneous coffee break, a detour onto an unknown road, or a last-minute decision to push further than planned, these moments add richness to the travel experience.
The Road Ahead
As we settle into Ban Krut, thoughts turn to the road ahead. The journey southward continues, with Malaysia and Singapore as the ultimate destinations. While the exact route is still uncertain, one thing is clear: the road will offer more opportunities for adventure, discovery, and growth.
For now, it’s time to savor the present moment—to enjoy the beauty of Ban Krut, the taste of fresh seafood, and the satisfaction of another day well spent on the road.
Motorbike touring is about more than just the ride—it’s about the freedom to explore, the connections made along the way, and the memories created. And today’s journey, from Khao Ngu to Ban Krut, was a perfect example of why we ride.
Stay tuned and enjoy yourself!!
