26.06.24 – Day 33 solo trip to the Baltic countries on a BMW R1150 RT
Today I set the alarm at 05.30 am – for the reason that I want to arrive at breakfast early.
Worked – I had breakfast in peace and could start the day early before it’s getting too hot.
The weather forecast talked about up to 30 degrees.
At 8 am I started my trip to the Old Town and center city of Kaunas.
Kaunas is the second-largest city in Lithuania after Vilnius, the fourth largest city in the Baltic Countries and an important centre of Lithuanian economic, academic, and cultural life. Kaunas was the largest city and the centre of a county in the Duchy of Trakai of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Trakai Palatinate since 1413. In the Russian Empire, it was the capital of the Kaunas Governorate from 1843 to 1915.
During the interwar period, it served as the temporary capital of Lithuania, when Vilnius was seized and controlled by Poland between 1920 and 1939. During that period Kaunas was celebrated for its rich cultural and academic life, fashion, construction of countless Art Deco and Lithuanian National Revival architectural-style buildings as well as popular furniture, interior design of the time, and a widespread cafe culture. The city interwar architecture is regarded as among the finest examples of European Art Deco and has received the European Heritage Label. It contributed to Kaunas being designated as the first city in Central and Eastern Europe as a UNESCO City of Design, and also to becoming a World Heritage Site in 2023 as the only European city representing large scale urbanization during the interwar period and versatile modernism architecture.
Kaunas was selected as the European Capital of Culture for 2022, together with Esch-sur-Alzette and Novi Sad.
From the hotel I needed to walk almost 40 min to the Old Town. A great walk in the fresh morning air along the Memel river.
First visited the formerly President Palace
And then walked around randomly in the center city.
In general a really nice city. Great architecture, beautiful women and handsome guys.
And a very very relaxed feeling. People here are not really in a hurry.
I took some photos – have a look and enjoy.
After5 hours of walking around I can say, I love the summer in this city!!!
Now it is time for a beer on the roof top terrace of the hotel.
Stay tuned and enjoy yourself!
